Wearing the Cape: The Role Playing Game

Created by Marion G. Harmon

Help fund the production of Wearing the Cape: The Roleplaying Game, the new superhero RPG, as a high quality hardback gamebook.

Latest Updates from Our Project:

Kami, Cyber-Ghosts, and Player Participation
about 7 years ago – Wed, Feb 15, 2017 at 09:58:24 PM

The art continues to roll out! I'm very happy with the way Kasia has rendered Kitsune and Shelly (who of course are going into Barlow's Guide). They will make great templates for players who want to run shapeshifter/spirits or cyber-ghosts (who might need their own Power-Type).

The campaign has also been inspiring some outside participation. Members of the RPG Academy ran a blind playtest (nobody had exactly mastered the rules, so things got a bit interesting). The dialogue is PG-13, and I think the whole thing threatened to go off the rails a couple of times, but they had fun with it. You can check it out below.

Also, I took an interview with Fate RPG.DE. They are the guys who publish Evil Hat's Fate titles in German, and the development of Wearing the Cape: The Roleplaying Game caught their attention.

You can link to the interview here (it's in both German and English):

Pretty neat, right?

So that's it for now. Everyone have a great Wednesday!

More Art, and Sourcebook Progress!
about 7 years ago – Mon, Feb 13, 2017 at 09:44:02 PM

Half of my artist team for the two sourcebooks is already hard at work, continuing to finish up pieces for the Chicago Sentinels who I couldn't put in the gamebook. You've seen Riptide and SaFire (who's technically not a Sentinel but is a fixture in Chicago). Here's Watchman and Variforce!

Got to say, I love seeing these character come out of my head to be realized in fantastic art.

While not attending directly to Kickstarter matters, I am also working on region background for different parts of the Post-Event world touched on lightly or not at all in the gamebook. Currently I'm fleshing out what happened in Sub-Saharan Africa, but rest assured that I will also be doing entries on places visited in the books (Japan, Cuba, etc). I will also be accepting suggestions from backers for places that I haven't gotten to yet, and shaping them to fit the themes of the setting.

So if you think you know what happened in Ireland, beyond what's mentioned in the gamebook, let me know!

We are more than halfway to the milestone that unlocks both The Archon Files and the Wearing the Cape Special Edition. Looking forward to it.

Fifth Stretch Goal Reached!
about 7 years ago – Fri, Feb 10, 2017 at 09:42:32 PM

This afternoon we crossed the threshold of the $35,000 milestone, unlocking the Wearing the Cape: The B-Files print edition. That leaves us with only 3 more milestones to hit, the next of which will unlock both the Wearing the Cape Special Edition (ebook) and the new Wearing the Cape: The Archon Files Add-On.

I'm still looking at adding some additional materials, such as art prints of the covers. If I do, I will bring them on as already reached goals. But no more sourcebooks! I've pretty much filled my working time between now and May, and am looking forward to working with all the Sentinels and Cape File backers to fit their favorite characters for the Post-Event World; and also with Dave Barrack to fit his great characters to the WtC:RPG rules.

And I've never been happier with a project. Thanks, everyone, for taking us this far.

New Sourcebook! The Archon Files.
about 7 years ago – Thu, Feb 09, 2017 at 06:34:20 PM

I've been working on the idea for this deal for a bit, and now I can announce the addition of a third Add-On. Wearing the Cape: The Archon Files (A WtC:RPG Grrl Power Sourcebook).

To quote the new campaign-page entry:

In my most recent book, Team-Ups and Crossovers, Astra did what all superheroes seem to do sooner or later; wander into other worlds and make interesting new friends or meet interesting variations on old ones. One of the stories, Astra Gets Grrl Power, was a collaboration between me and Dave Barrack, writer of the smart and funny Grrl Power online comic. Astra got to meet Halo, Maxima, and other members of Arc-SWAT, the "superhero" field team of Archon, at a comic convention. Hilarity and property damage ensued. My fans loved it. Dave's fans loved it.

Continuing our partnership, Dave and I have decided to create a special sourcebook, PDF only, giving background  and WtC:RPG stats for the Arc-SWAT team and some of the villains of their world. It will feature Maxima, Halo, and the rest of the team, as well as background and stats for Archon as an organization, background on Halo's world (from the point of view of Astra and later agents who "surveyed" the alternate reality), entries on every named character, and whatever other goodies Dave and I can think to throw in.

Wearing the Cape: The Archon Files will be a sourcebook using the same format as Barlow's Guide and The B-Files. Its characters will be fully compatible with WtC:RPG rules and the characters given in the gamebook and other sourcebooks, with enough information for players who wish to campaign exclusively in Dave's excellent superhero world or just launch crossover adventures of their own.

WtC:AF will be unlocked at the $40,000 milestone, but of course anyone who wants to speed it along can go ahead and pre-pledge by adding $15 to their current pledge amount. Yes, I will be up to my eyeballs in new character design, translating Dave's great characters into statted-out capes ready to play. It will be worth it.

The Art of Character. (Characters and Art?)
about 7 years ago – Tue, Feb 07, 2017 at 05:18:32 PM

Today we are halfway to the next stretch goal Add-On, the hardcover edition of Wearing the Cape: The B-Files. This will put all campaign books out there in beautiful printed books for your game table!

There is more good news on production progress; I have been working with my Barlow's Guide artist to produce awesome images of the capes from the series that are going into the sourcebook. If you haven't looked over the campaign page recently, here are two of them: SaFire and Riptide!

She is the artist who will be working with the Sentinel pledgers to bring their own in-world characters to life.

New Forum for Characters and Background

Last week I opened a reddit thread for those Sentinel and Cape-File pledgers who wanted to get a jump on the creative process. I'm now moving it to a new Google+ page, open to everybody who has backed the campaign or is just curious to see what's going on.

The main reason for the move is the google+ format enables me to better see who is making comments (I know I'm not seeing at least some on the reddit thread). The google+ page also allows for easy posting of character art, notifications of ongoing discussions, etc.

It is located here: https://plus.google.com/u/0/communities/101484222420788421171

There has been a lot of activity on the reddit thread. To give you some idea of what's been happening, here's a partial list of possible new superhumans for the Post-Event World:

Hardcase: a villain with the limited ability to change the state of matter, shifting targets between solid, liquid, and gas.

Ambrosius: a now-skeptical New Age wizard with the power to manifest and control mystic energy pulled from his own spiritual "well." A Texas Ranger?

Chronicler: a British PI with the psychic gift of psychometry; the ability to "read" the history of objects. And do a lot more than just read them.

Firewall: a traumatized pyrokinetic freelancer (amazingly helpful with wildfires and industrial accidents).

Shortspark: a cheerful cape with the power to absorb/redirect/transform thermal and kinetic energy.

Iri (no codename): an apathetic stoner with serious telekinetic powers.

There are many more.

I will also post updates on new regional information there (I am currently working on a Barlow's Guide entry for Sub-Saharan Africa). Backers with their own opinions about what may have happened Post-Event in different parts of the world are welcome to post their thoughts here, too!

Who knows, they may find themselves in the sourcebooks with full credit for what happened in Argentina, Ireland, or Taiwan. It's a big world.

Again, thank you for bringing the campaign this far!
